Genovese, classe 1960, ha iniziato a suonare la chitarra nel 1975 con alle spalle studi di teoria musicale, armonia e pianoforte. Nei primi anni ’80 si è perfezionato con Armando Corsi e Beppe Gambetta. Nell’estate 1986 ha seguito un corso al Berklee College of Music di Boston. È laureato al D.A.M.S. di Bologna con una tesi sul Blues.
Dal 1985 al 1990 è stato il front man di uno dei gruppi più importanti della scena rock-blues italiana, Big Fat Mama, con cui ha inciso tre LPs (l’ultimo un doppio dal vivo), ha suonato nei principali clubs della penisola e nelle più importanti manifestazioni musicali.
Con alcune leggende del British Blues, come il saxofonista Dick Heckstall-Smith (Colosseum, Alexis Korner, John Mayall), il batterista Mickey Waller (Jeff Beck, Ron Wood, Rod Stewart) ed il bassista Bob Brunning (Savoy Brown) ha formato il gruppo Downtown con il quale si è esibito in Italia ed all’estero.
Ha suonato con Fabio Treves e la sua band, con Red Wine (uno dei più importanti gruppi bluegrass europei, con i quali ha collaborato anche in disco ed ha effettuato un tour negli U.S.A. nel 2002), con Beppe Gambetta (tournée europea nell’estate 1992 con Gene Parsons, ex Byrds). A ciò si sono affiancate un’intensa attività didattica, alcuni articoli e trascrizioni per riviste specializzate, la pubblicazione per la Bèrben di Ancona di un metodo per chitarra country-rock scritto a quattro mani con Beppe Gambetta e vari lavori di produzione artistica (Fabio Treves, La Rosa Tatuata).
Del marzo 1994 è la partecipazione (unico musicista italiano) alla rassegna “South by Southwest” ad Austin, Texas.
Dal 1990 si esibisce con una propria band e come solista e dal 1992 ad oggi ha pubblicato 7 cds (“On My Backdoor, Someday” è il primo) e partecipato come ospite in molti altri (Fabio Treves, Red Wine, YoYo Mundi, La Rosa Tatuata, etc.)
Nel tour di presentazione del cd GAMBLERS, scritto a quattro mani con il cantautore newyorkese JONO MANSON (marzo 2003), ha partecipato ad alcuni concerti anche JOHN POPPER, mitico armonicista dei BLUES TRAVELER.
Dal 2002 la band ha accompagnato regolarmente il grande ROY ROGERS, produttore di JOHN LEE HOOKER nei suoi tour italiani.
Dal 2003 è membro della super-band SLOW FEET, insieme con REINHOLD KOHL, fotografo/bassista bolzanino, ed alcuni grandi del rock italiano come FRANZ DI CIOCCIO, LUCIO FABBRI (PFM) e VITTORIO DE SCALZI (New Trolls); il primo cd “Elephant Memory” è del 2007.
Nel 2009 pubblica “Canzoni di schiena”, album in italiano e genovese che fa seguito a “Io non sono io”, Ep del 2004.
Biography
Born in Genova, Italy in 1960. He began to play guitar in 1975 after studying music theory, harmony and piano.
In the early 80s he attended master classes with Armando Corsi and Beppe Gambetta. In 1986 attended a summer course at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Graduated in music semiotics at University of Bologna, Italy.
From 1985 to 1990 he has been leading Big Fat Mama, one of the most important rock-blues bands in Italy, with whom recorded 3 LPs, played top clubs and festivals, appeared on several Tv programs (local and nationwide broadcasting), worked with several american blues players touring Italy.
He is co-founding member of Downtown, together with legends of the British blues such as sax player Dick Heckstall-Smith (Colosseum, Alexis Corner, John Mayall), drummer Mickey Waller (Jeff Beck, Ron Wood, Rod Stewart) and bass player Bob Brunning (Savoy Brown). The band split in 1991 after touring extensively.
He is currently playing with his own band (opening for Holmes Bros., Stephen Bruton, Lucky Peterson, Son Seals, Dave Alvin and touring with Dirk Hamilton, Fred James and Roscoe Shelton), as a soloist (opening for John Hammond, James Cotton, Dirty Dozen Brass Band; collaboration with David Essig), with Red Wine (one of the most important bluegrass bands in Europe), with guitarist Beppe Gambetta (summer 1992 European tour with Gene Parson, formerly with the Byrds; Blues to Bop Festival in Lugano, Switzerland with Steve Kaufman, broadcast by Swiss TV) and with Fabio Treves ("father" of Italian blues scene, opening for Junior Wells, ZZ TOP, appearances on national Tv networks).
He has been writing for Italian music magazines, a country guitar method (with Beppe Gambetta), producing and playing (live and on CD) with some of the most exciting bands in his area and he also teaching and doing workshops all over the country.
Since 1992 he has published 7 cds on his own name. During the promotional tour of the “Gamblers” cd in 2003, written together with American songwriter JONO MANSON, the great BLUES TRAVELER’s harmonica player JOHN POPPER joined the band for some gigs.
From 2002 on, the band has been backing ROY ROGERS (master of slide guitar and musician/producer for JOHN LEE HOOKER) several times during his Italian tours.
He is founding member of SLOW FEET, a super band conceived by photographer/bass player REINHOLD KOHL, together with some Italian Rock legends such as FRANZ DI CIOCCIO, LUCIO FABBRI (PFM) and VITTORIO DE SCALZI (New Trolls); their first cd, “Elephant Memory” has been issued in 2007.
