Era il 1985 quando Paolo Bonfanti fu contattato per la prima volta da uno dei gruppi di punta del bluegrass europeo, Red Wine, per sostituire temporaneamente un virtuoso della chitarra acustica flatpicking come Beppe Gambetta che nel frattempo aveva intrapreso la carriera solista.
Da allora Paolo Bonfanti e Martino Coppo hanno cominciato a incrociare le proprie strade, a suonare insieme in svariate situazioni fino alla decisione di costituire un duo in cui dare sfogo a tutta la loro poliedricità e varietà di gusti e passioni musicali comuni.
It was around 1985 when Paolo Bonfanti was asked for the first time by Red Wine, one of the leading Bluegrass bands in Europe, to temporarily replace acoustic guitar flatpicking virtuoso Beppe Gambetta, who had meanwhile started his solo career.
Since then, Paolo Bonfanti and Martino Coppo began to cross their paths frequently, playing together in many different occasions and ensembles, until they decided to form a duo where to give space to their versatility and variety of common taste and passion for music.

Paolo e Martino continuano ora il loro percorso musicale con PRACINA STOMP (Felmay 2019), il loro secondo scintillante album, ispirato al genere Americana, una musica che incorpora vari stili delle radici (folk, blues, bluegrass, country…) uniti per creare un suono originale ed attualissimo, seppur rispettoso delle tradizioni.
In questo solco stilistico, il nuovo disco si compone quasi interamente di eccellenti composizioni originali: più orientate al blues (I Kinda Like It, Over’s Under) o all’american songwriting (You Were Right, Nowhere) quelle di Paolo, più vicine al bluegrass (Anniversary Reel, Pracina Stomp, Visa Application Blues) quelle di Martino. E c’è ancora spazio per emozionanti ballate in collaborazione con altri autori: Slow Dance di Coppo & Weatherford, Cold Dark Grave di Silvio Ferretti e For What It’s Worth di Christoffer Olsson.
L’album è stato prodotto dal leggendario musicista e produttore LARRY CAMPBELL. Come produttore Larry ha vinto ben tre Grammy Awards per gli ultimi dischi di Levon Helm (The Band) ed ha messo la sua firma sugli albums di The Dixie Hummingbirds, Hot Tuna, David Bromberg, Jorma Kaukonen, Happy Traum e tanti altri. Paolo and Martino are now continuing their musical journey with PRACINA STOMP (Felmay 2019), their new and sparkling album, inspired by Americana genre, a music that incorporates various root styles (folk, blues, bluegrass, country...) combined to create an original and topical sound, albeit respectful of traditions.
In this stylistic footstep, the new album is made up almost entirely of excellent original compositions: more oriented towards the blues (I Kinda Like It, Over's Under) or to American songwriting (You Were Right, Nowhere) those by Paolo, closer to the bluegrass (Anniversary Reel, Pracina Stomp, Visa Application Blues) those by Martino. And there is still room for exciting ballads in collaboration with other authors: Slow Dance by Coppo & Weatherford, Cold Dark Grave by Silvio Ferretti and For What It’s Worth by Christoffer Olsson.
The album was produced by legendary musician and producer LARRY CAMPBELL. Le registrazioni si sono svolte alla Cascina Pracina, tra i boschi dell’Alto Monferrato. In passato era tradizione che la comunità rurale si ritrovasse qui il sabato sera per fare musica, mangiare, bere e stare in allegria. E così è stato anche per queste session.
In questa magica atmosfera Paolo & Martino hanno compiuto un piccolo miracolo musicale costruito con indiscutibile virtuosismo, cuore e buone vibrazioni. Coadiuvati dalla geniale produzione di Campbell e da un nucleo di esperti session-men, licenziano un album di grande spessore che rimarrà negli annali di questo genere musicale, imperdibile per tutti gli appassionati del genere ed affascinante per ogni amante della buona musica.

Recordings took place at Cascina Pracina, in the woods of Alto Monferrato, Northern Italy. In the past it was a tradition that the rural community would meet in this farm on Saturday night to make music, eat, drink and have fun. And so it was also for these sessions.
In this magical atmosphere Paolo & Martino have accomplished a small musical miracle built with unquestionable virtuosity, heart and good vibes. In FRIEND OF A FRIEND(Felmay 2014) brani originali e reinterpretazioni si dividono equamente lo spazio a disposizione: dalla canzone d'autore americana (Neil Young, John Prine e David Wilcox) al bluegrass (il "padre fondatore" Bill Monroe); dal blues (Muddy Waters) al folk e al gospel; dalle suggestioni irlandesi di Matilda's Dance al tributo al grande Bill Monroe nello strumentale WSM (in una versione che si rifà in qualche modo agli Hot Tuna più acustici), dalle ballads d'autore come Friend Of A Friend (la title track) o Trains ad insolite misture tra musica cajun e dialetto genovese come in Via da Zèna.
Tutte le influenze musicali sono ben amalgamate e convergono per dare vita ad un mix estremamente vario ed affascinante.
Original songs and revisited interpretations equally share the available space on the CD FRIEND OF A FRIEND (Felmay 2014): from covers of American singer-songwriters’pieces (Neil Young, John Prine and David Wilcox) to bluegrass classics (Tennessee Blues), from Blues (Muddy Waters) to Folk and Gospel, from the evocative Irish music atmosphere of ‘Matilda's Dance’ to a tribute to the “Father of Bluegrass” Bill Monroe with the instrumental ‘WSM’, here in a more intimate version (which resembles in some way Jorma Kaukonen’s Hot Tuna acoustic side), from original ballads like ‘Friend of a Friend’ (the title track) or ‘Trains’ to unusual mixes of Cajun music and Genova’s dialect as in ‘Via da Zena’.
Paolo’s and Martino’s musical influences are all well mixed and balanced, and converge to give birth to an extremely various and fascinating project.

Ha iniziato a suonare la chitarra ‘virtuale’ all'età di 5 anni, su una racchetta da tennis, e più seriamente (anche se da autodidatta) all'età di 13 anni, ispirato dal suono acustico di Bob Dylan, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, The Byrds e Joni Mitchell.
Verso la fine degli anni '70 ha scoperto un paio di album: "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" della Nitty Gritty Dirt Band e "When The Storm Is Over" dei New Grass Revival. Ha capito subito che era la musica che voleva suonare! Così ha preso in mano il mandolino (che, anche se molto popolare in Italia, non lo aveva mai realmente attratto) affascinato dal suono di Sam Bush, David Grisman, John Hartford, Norman Blake e Tony Rice.
Tutti questi artisti sono stati una grande ispirazione per intraprendere una sorta di viaggio musicale a ritroso verso le fonti della tradizione Bluegrass, scoprendo ed innamorandosi perdutamente della musica di artisti leggendari quali, tra gli altri, JD Crowe e New South, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, The Seldom Scene, The Country Gentlemen, Jimmy Martin, The Stanley Brothers, Flatt & Scruggs e naturalmente Bill Monroe.
Nel 1981 entra a far parte della Red Wine, la band in cui tuttora suona il mandolino ed è voce solista e con cui inizia a fare concerti in tutta Italia, Europa e, dalla metà degli anni '90, negli Stati Uniti, con partecipazioni ai maggiori festival in tutto il paese nonchè a numerose edizioni dell'IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) WOB World of Bluegrass a Owensboro KY, Louisville KY, Nashville TN e più di recente Raleigh NC.
Ha anche suonato e collaborato con numerosi artisti italiani e americani come Tony Trischka, Peter Rowan, Kathy Kallick, Kathy Chiavola, Russ Barenberg, Jim Hurst, Chris Jones, Barry & Holly Tashian, Nial Toner, Beppe Gambetta, Paolo Bonfanti, Carlo Aonzo, Roberto Della Vecchia, Vittorio De Scalzi, New Trolls e La Rosa Tatuata.
È stato membro attivo del Consiglio di EBMA (European Bluegrass Music Association) dal 2008 al 2014 ed è spesso anche impegnato ad insegnare il mandolino bluegrass/folk in seminari in Italia ed in Europa.
Martino starts playing virtual guitar at age 5, on a tennis racket, and more seriously (albeit self-taught) at age 13, inspired by the acoustic sound of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, The Byrds, Bob Dylan, and Joni Mitchell.
Towards the end of the ‘70s a friend gave him a couple of LP’s: “Uncle Charlie” by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and “When The Storm Is Over” by the New Grass Revival. He immediately knew that was the music he wanted to play. So he picked up the mandolin (which, although very popular in Italy, had never appealed to him before) awestruck by the sound of Sam Bush, David Grisman, John Hartford, Norman Blake and Tony Rice.
ll these great artists have been a great inspiration to take up a sort of backwards musical journey towards the sources of traditional Bluegrass, discovering and felling in love hopelessly with the music of legends, among the others, such as J.D. Crowe & New South, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, The Seldom Scene, The Country Gentlemen, Jimmy Martin, The Stanley Brothers, Flatt & Scruggs and of course Bill Monroe.
In 1981 he joined the popular Italian bluegrass band Red Wine, where he’s still playing and singing lead vocal, and started touring intensively all over Italy, Europe, and, from the mid-‘90s, in the USA, with many appearances at festival and venues all over the country (Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco CA, ROMP Festival in Owensboro KY, Bill Monroe Bluegrass Jamboree in Bean Blossom IN, Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield KS, Chili & Bluegrass Festival in Tulsa OK, Station Inn in Nashville TN, Wintegrass in Seattle OR, just to name a few) and as a showcasing band at the IBMA World Of Bluegrass in Owensboro KY, Louisville KY, Nashville TN and more recently Raleigh NC.
He has also been touring and playing with Italian and American artists such as Tony Trischka, Peter Rowan, Kathy Kallick, Chris Jones, Kathy Chiavola, Jim Hurst, Russ Barenberg, Barry & Holly Tashian, Beppe Gambetta, Paolo Bonfanti, Carlo Aonzo, Roberto Della Vecchia, New Trolls, Vittorio De Scalzi e La Rosa Tatuata.
He’s been an active Member of the Board of EBMA (European Bluegrass Music Association) from 2008 to 2014 and is often busy teaching bluegrass/folk mandolin at various workshops in Italy and in Europe.

Paolo Bonfanti
Genovese, classe 1960, dopo studi di pianoforte e armonia, inizi a suonare la chitarra nel 1975. Si perfeziona poi con Armando Corsi e Beppe Gambetta; nel 1986 frequenta un corso estivo al Berklee College of Music di Boston. E’ laureato al DAMS di Bologna con una tesi sul Blues.
Dal 1985 al 1990 è il frontman dei Big Fat Mama, uno dei più importanti gruppi della scena rock-blues italiana, con cui incide tre album (tra cui un doppio live) e suona nei più importanti club della penisola, partecipando ai maggiori festival.
Dal 1990 al 1993 effettua numerosi tour italiani ed europei con Downtown, un supergruppo formato insieme con il sassofonista Dick Heckstall-Smith (Colosseum, Alexis Korner, John Mayall) ), il batterista Mickey Waller (Jeff Beck, Ron Wood, Rod Stewart) ed il bassista Bob Brunning (Savoy Brown), vere e proprie leggende del Blues inglese.
Incrocia la strada con le figure più importanti della scena nazionale, tra le quali ricordiamo Fabio Treves e la sua band, Beppe Gambetta in una tourneè con Gene Parsons dei Byrds nel 1992 ed i concittadini Red Wine, una delle realtà più importanti in Europa per quanto riguarda il bluegrass, negli album dei quali è spesso ospite e con cui ha effettuato un tour americano nel 2002.
La carriera solista inizia invece nel 1990 e fino ad oggi sono stati prodotti, a partire dall'iniziale "On My Backdoor Someday", ben undici album, che hanno permesso a Paolo di partecipare nel 1994, unico artista italiano, al "South by Southwest" di Austin, Texas e di accompagnare più volte, a partire dal 2002, con la sua band il grande Roy Rogers, virtuoso della chitarra slide e produttore di John Lee Hooker, durante i suoi tour italiani.
Dal 2003 fa parte anche di Slow Feet, un vero e proprio supergruppo italiano che vanta al suo interno Franz Di Cioccio e Lucio Fabbri di P.F.M. ed il bassista Reinhold Kohl. Con questa formazione oltre a suonare regolarmente in tutta Italia ha anche pubblicato, nel 2007, un disco intitolato "Elephant Memory”.
Le collaborazioni artistiche nel corso degli anni sono moltissime; tra di esse quella col cantautore e produttore americano Jono Manson, che ha portato nel 2003 all'album "Gamblers" e ad un tour a cui ha partecipato anche l'armonicista dei Blues Traveler John Popper, ed in seguito anche con David James, bassista e cantante dei Fish Heads & Rice con cui nel 2011 ha inciso "Purple House", album all'insegna del rhythm&blues e del soul. Ha suonato inoltre come ospite (in cd e dal vivo) tra i tanti, di Yo Yo Mundi e Zibba ed è stato produttore artistico di Fabio Treves e de La Rosa Tatuata.
A questo si è affiancata negli anni l’attività didattica, che spazia da articoli e trascrizioni per riviste specializzate alla pubblicazione per la Bèrben di Ancona di un metodo per chitarra country-rock scritto a quattro mani con Beppe Gambetta, dal manuale "Bottleneck Guitar" ai metodi didattici "La Chitarra Elettrica” e “La Chitarra Acustica Secondo Bonfanti", tutti pubblicati da fingerpicking.net e distribuiti da Giunti.
Nel febbraio del 2014 è stato pubblicato per l'etichetta Felmay il cd "Friend of a Friend", con Martino Coppo, uno dei migliori mandolinisti bluegrass in Europa e, nel giugno 2015, ”Back Home Alive", registrato dal vivo al Teatro Municipale di Casale Monferrato, una retrospettiva "live" di alcuni vecchi brani in una veste quasi completamente rinnovata, con la produzione artistica di Steve Berlin (Blasters, Los Lobos), il missaggio di David Simon-Baker (Los Lobos) e il mastering di David Glasser (che ha curato le ultime raccolte "live" per il cinquantenario dei Grateful Dead); Paolo ha avuto l’onore di suonare a MonfortinJazz proprio a fianco dei Los Lobos a luglio 2015.
Back Home Alive” è stato inserito tra i migliori 100 dischi italiani nel libro “Storie di rock italiano dal boom economico alla crisi finanziaria” di Daniele Biacchessi.
Nel corso del 2018 è stato invitato ad AugustiBluus, uno dei più importanti festival europei, ad Haapsalu (Estonia) dove ha riscosso un grande successo ed ha ricevuto un premio alla carriera nel corso della finale 2018 dell’Italian Blues Challenge, tenutasi al teatro “G. Verdi” di Fiorenzuola d’Arda (PC), alla presenza dello scrittore Massimo Carlotto e di Sergio Mancinelli (Radio Capital).
Born in Genova, Italy in 1960 started playing guitar in 1975 after studying classical piano.
Graduated in music semiotics at University of Bologna.
From 1985 to 1990 he has been leading BIG FAT MAMA, one of the most important italian rock bands, with whom he recorded 3 LPs.
From 1990 to 1992 played with some British Blues legends such as sax player Dick Heckstall-Smith (Colosseum, J. Mayall) and drummer Mickey Waller (J. Beck, Rod Stewart) in a band named DOWNTOWN.
He is currently playing as a solo act and with his own band all over Italy and Europe and in the U.S. a few times (Austin, Tx "South By Southwest", Winfield, Ks. Acoustic Music Festival); collaborated also with some of the best rock and blues musicians such as Roy Rogers (J. Lee Hooker's guitarist and producer) and John Popper (Blues Traveler).
He is also a guitar/music teacher and three guitar manuals has been published over the years, "Country-Rock Guitar" (together with italian flatpicking guitar wizard Beppe Gambetta), "Bottleneck Guitar”, “The Electric Guitar According to P. B." and “The Acoustic Guitar According to P. B."
In february 2014 cd "Friend of a Friend" with Martino Coppo, one of the best bluegrass/country mandolin players in Europe, has been issued.
Paolo's latest cd "Back Home Alive" (2015), is a sort of "live" retrospective of his career including completely new versions of some of his old songs.
The cd has been produced by Steve Berlin (Blasters, Los Lobos), mixed by David Simon-Baker (Los Lobos) and mastered by David Glasser (Grateful Dead 50 years box sets) and it has been issued also in hi-q double LP version.
He also played a short set of songs with Los Lobos during their concert at MonforteInJazz Festival in july 2015.
In 2018 Paolo and the band played the AugustiBluus Festival in Haapsalu, Estonia and received a lifetime career achievement during the italian section final of European Blues Challenge.
